Description
Elena has devoted her teaching career to the Head Start program. She and her director have been concerned for years that so many of the children from their program appear to be automatically placed in a "transitional kindergarten" in their assigned school district, with lowered developmental expectations. Having written to the district superintendent about the problem, they were invited to briefly address the principals at their annual meeting. Elena and her director spent considerable time planning their presentation, during which they stressed the need for fair and equitable assessment of their students. As they spoke, however, they noticed a number of principals who talked among themselves or read other conference-related material. Later, one principal told them not to "waste their time," because educators in the district had set beliefs about characteristics of children who had been in Head Start. Ben has been a kindergarten teacher for three years in a large urban school district characterized by high levels of child poverty. He graduated from a teacher preparation program centered on child advocacy and social justice, and has been persistent in trying to create and maintain respect and high expectations for the children. When he countered a very negative comment about the children and their families at a recent faculty meeting, a senior faculty member asked him angrily, "Just who do you think you are?" After the meeting, the principal took Ben aside and suggested that it would be important for him to become more of a "team player" if he wanted to be successful in the school.
